Stereomojo has reviewed the Nightingale AFS-30 tube power amp ($5,100) and PTS-02 tube preamp ($2,390). These are Italian made components with walnut cabinets and classy, retro styling (photo). The power amp is a Class A design with 30Wpc, while the preamp has both MM and MC phono inputs, an attached power cord, and no headphone jack.
Reviewer Mike Peshkin loved the amp/preamp combo overall. He did prefer his Hagerman Piccolo phono preamp to the phonostage(s) in the PTS-02, however. In conclusion, he writes:
Summing it all up I have to say that this combo is one of the great duos out there…I loved my time with it, loved its adaptability with phono playback (I made it even more so with the addition of the Piccolo), and was thrilled with how CDs sounded. Loan me some money and I’ll keep them…OK?
Read the entire review, then do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of the Leo Kottke album, 6 and 12 String Guitar, that Mike gushes over in this review (and others). It’s a “must-have” in my book.
What, endless props to those goofs at Stereo mojo and nothing about the new issue of Tone Audio? Wow you’re on top of things here.
